The Carnival in Majorca is a tradition that involves people and religion, costumes and parties. Carnival or, as it is known in french, Mardi Gras, is a festivity that comes at the beginning of the year, in the middle february, where it beggins the Easter religious tradition.
It is typical for these dates that adults and children feel free to dress with some costumes and go by the street wearing them. All the cities and towns in Majorca (as well as in most of the cities in Spain) show their best dresses to welcome peoples that celebrate this dates.
There is also the tradition of having a costumes parade where, whoever wants to, can make a "comparsa" with or without carriage to walk around the cities showing their suits to the people.
Come to Majorca and enjoy the Carnival festivities. These days of enjoyment and happiness are good days to visit us!
The Mallorca Carnival is also known as Els Darrers Dies (The Last Days), in reference to the last days in which meat can be eaten before the start of Lent, in accordance with Catholicism. The festivities begin on the Thursday of Dijous Jarder and continue until the weekend, when there are processions with hordes of people in fancy dress. It is normal for people to go out in fancy dress in the evening during this weekend. To round off the celebrations with a touch of ironic humour, in many places a ´sardine burial´ is held, at which many people dressed in mourning act out the burial of a sardine.
